Entry #4 Pretty Smart Spending
Let's be honest, who doesn't love to shop? I know that I do and that it is my favorite distraction from life's circumstances. The thing is, I also love to save money! If you are like me and love to shop but also save, you know the struggle. The feeling of finding something super cute like a pretty top, or some nice shoes beats almost anything but also saving money! I know that in our economy, it's not very easy to shop and save money, but in this blog i'll share some tips that help me, and could maybe help you!
Budget
First off, it's important to know your total monthly income as well as your fixed expenses. Fixed expenses will be your expenses that stay consistent. For example, my car payment stays the same every month as well as my car insurance, so those two things will be fixed expenses. Yours may be different, like maybe you pay rent every month. I still live with my parents, so I only have two things I need to pay. Every first check of the month, my car insurance and my car gets paid. Then, the rest of my money I earn throughout the month is the money I get to spend on shopping, food, and miscellaneous things.
Discipline
Although I really could spend all this money, I like to save in case of emergencies and really just to grow my savings. It's really important to have a savings account and be disciplined. That is the most important thing. In order to save money, you have to learn not to learn not to use it. I know it sounds obvious, but it takes a lot of self control and discipline to be able to see money in your account and be able to use it and choose not to.
Set a Goal
Another thing that helps me is setting goals. Whatever your goal may be, let that be your motivation. You may want to buy a house or a car. Whenever you want to buy those pretty shoes, think about your goal! My goal is to save as much money as I possibly can before I start nursing school. This goal will help prepare me for my future as I won't be able to work as much as I do now.
Do You Need It?
My last tip is, do you need it? I know I don't need every beautiful piece of clothing I see at the mall, but I sure want it. For someone like me, I want everything I see. What I have to constantly remind myself is, do I need it? Asking myself this really helps me think about things deeper. Because the reality is I don't need it! Say I think I do need it, well then I move on think about it. Is it a good price? Is the quality good? Will I wear it more than once? Will it hurt the bank? It's important to think about what we spend our money on and not just compulsively buy when wanting to save.
